Juries developed in England during the Middle Ages and are a hallmark of the English common law system established under the Magna Carta. Chapter 39 of King John's Magna Carta includes the guarantee that no free man may suffer punishment without the lawful judgment of his peers. The purpose of a Grand Jury is to ensure that the judiciary system is independent of the government and holds true to the principles of fundamental justice, fairness and equity.
The difference between a Grand Jury and a regular (petite) jury. First, a Grand Jury is comprised of 23 jurors in comparison to 12 juries in a petite jury. The role of the Grand Jury is unique from the petite jury in that the purpose is not to find guilt, instead the Grand Jury evaluates criminal evidence and returns what was called a "presentment” or “true bill” if there is sufficient evidence of a crime or a “nolle prosequi” if not.
Grand Juries were common in the Canadian Judicial system until, under the watch of Trudeau Sr. Grand Juries faded away. The last Grand Jury in Canada was held in Nova Scotia in 1984. As the right to trial by jury is a common law right, it cannot be repealed through legislation, so we still HAVE this right! So, we are taking back our authority and BRINGING BACK THE GRAND JURY!
We have secured 16 jurors, so we need 10 more, could it be YOU?
Deliberation will be held over Zoom as we have folks from all over the country selected so it can be done from the comfort of your home. The schedule will be three full weekends, Sat and Sunday which we require all participants available during this time. Once we secure all the jurors we will set a start time and will require the approved jurors to commit to the Grand Jury proceedings as that time.
